About the Rural Reporting Collaborative

Amelia Bates / Grist

The Rural Newswire is a project of the Center for Rural Strategies and Grist.

The Center for Rural Strategies is a coalition-building organization that focuses on improving economic and social conditions for rural communities. We also operate the Daily Yonder, a national news outlet in line with that same mission.

Grist is an independent nonprofit media organization dedicated to telling stories about climate, justice, and solutions.

We worked together to create this site as a clearinghouse for stories about rural America that any newsroom can republish. We hope newsrooms will use it to both share stories available to syndicate and to pick up stories from other outlets.

To Contribute Stories

To make a story available to syndicate, click the Submit a story tab.

To Syndicate Stories

To republish a story from the Rural Newswire, please read below. All stories on this site are free to republish as long as you follow our guidelines.

Guidelines:

1. Credit our authors

Please ensure that the author’s byline is correct. At the top of our stories, if on the web, please include this text and link: “This story was originally published at [Outlet – Please Specify Which Partner] and is part of a collaboration at RuralNewsWire.org.”

2. Check the image requirements.

Please use your own images unless one of our partners specifically says otherwise on their site. You may run into significant licensing problems if you do not follow these guidelines.

3. Don’t change anything significant.

You can change the headline and/or subheading, but articles must be republished in their entirety. It’s ok to change references to time (“yesterday” to “today”) or location (“Iowa City, IA” to “here”). If you really think changing our stories with additional localized copy would help, please contact us directly and we can discuss the change. We must approve the change before it goes live.

4. Don’t sell our stories.

We also ask that you don’t sell ads specifically meant to be placed in our stories. If you already have ads populating on your site, that’s completely fine.

5. Keep in contact.

Let us know if you republish our content! We’d love to know what you found useful and what we can help you with in the future. Email us at adam@ruralstrategies.org.
